Ashes, Tears and Earthquake - by Po Yuan (2/28/2001)
This morning at 8:30am, the parents of the 2 deceased students of the
visiting Beijing Dance Academy Delegation left for Beijing on board a Shuttle by United via San Francisco. In their hands, are the cinerary caskets of the ashes of the two young bodies. Tears, lots of tears, falling from their eyes. The parents told me both kids like America, like American music, like American food, like the spirit of freedom of America. It turned out that this has become their first and only trip to the dream land. The parents want to thank each and every one of you who have shown your sympathy and care to the victim families. Without the support of your kind-hearted companionship, either in person or by phone, either through donation or by volunteering your time to help, it is almost impossible for them to hold up to withstand the emotional depression they had to suffer these days. I don't have a child, so I probably won't be able to understand how sad it is to lose a child, but I see deep into the their eyes the great sorrow and hopelessness.
One mother said, "I had thought about what's necessity to continue to live; after seeing so many nice and caring people, I heard their advice and I will live for these people, for the people who care about me - my husband and my new friends here and those in China" ... that probably summarized the emotional journey they had taken.
There were about 20 people or so were at the airport to see them off, including Li Hengda, the art director of APAT, who broke down with tears when seeing them entering the gate. It has been a tragedy for him too and for everybody involved. The principal of Beijing Dance Academy also had his eyes wet when I said to him that we welcome future delegations from the Academy to visit Seattle.
In a word, it was a very emotional moment, and hopefully, it brings a closure to one chapter of this tragedy. Why there was an earthquake soon after they left? I don't know but I'd rather believe that it was because God is sad and angry with himself for taking the two good kids away from their parents ... ...
Lots of members had donated money or helped out in other ways, here are just a few comments from our members...

I am a Chinese graduate student at UW. I got the message from CSSA
regarding the Chinese artists and called you this noon. I want to ask
whether there is any kind of assistance they might need, such as
transportation, caring, communication, etc. I and my friend will be glad
to volunteer in assisting them if they need help. Please let me know if

Dear Friends -
"They [the parents] want to thank all kind-hearted people who have shown the care and love to these kids. The fact that local Chinese communities have united to help the victims, [...] is known to the Chinese news media and many people in China. The general consul from San Francisco has come to Seattle to help with the situation and the Governor of our State has also sent a representative to attend the funeral. "
