At
the invitation of NWCHP, Mr. Chienfu Li, President of Taiwan Yahoo! will come
to Seattle to speak, in English, on Asian e-commerce markets and his startup
experiences. The seminar is scheduled on the 11th of April (Tuesday)
between 6:30pm and 9:30pm at Hotel Edgewater’s Olympic Ballroom. This hotel is
located by the Puget Sound at Pier 67 with an excellent water view, plenty
parking space and Port of Seattle, RealNetwork and Old Spaghetti Factory
nearby.
Mr. Li has been an
Arthur Anderson MIS consultant for 10 years, founded Exact Consulting, joined
Sina.com and started its Taiwan operations which stabilized its supply chain,
site content and sales. In one year, he brought the business from a few
hundred thousand dollar company to a multi-million dollar company and increased
the site membership by several hundred percent. In 1998, he joined Yahoo! Inc. to start Yahoo!
Taiwan and supervised Yahoo Asia which established a strong Yahoo presence in
the Greater China regions. In February 2000, he was assigned a new task as
Director of Broadcast and Business Services, Asia Yahoo! which is
another start-up operation to promote Yahoo!'s broadcast business in Asia. He has been a
very successful start-up expert who has started major operations for two
world-class sites - Yahoo and Sina. We are very excited that he is willing to take a
special trip to Seattle and share his vision on Asian e-commerce market and his
startup experiences with us.
Mr.
Li is a legendary in Great China area for another reason: prior to his business
careers more than 10 years ago, he was a celebrated singer in Taiwan, populated
by his song The Descendents of the Dragon which was written by famous
song-writer Mr. De-Chien Hou.
Mr.
Li’s visit is brought by the invitation of NWCHP, a newly incorporated
non-profit organization with the full name Northwest Chinese Hi-Tech
Professionals Association. NWCHP’s missions are to represent and serve more
than 5,000 Chinese Hi-tech Professionals (CHPs) in the Northwest region and
incubate Chinese hi-tech startup Dot-com’s.
NWCHP
is founded for two reasons. For one, the founders of NWCHP realized that
strength and value come from the synergy created by the networking of
individual persons. Like Mr. George Gilder termed what’s so called Metcalfe’s
Law that says the value of a network is proportional to n2 where n
is the number of terminals/devices connected to the network. For two, the
founders of NWCHP are excited by the wave of entrepreneurship bashing the whole
country and the world. They were encouraged by their peers’ successes in
creating professional associations and startups which have integrated into and
gained high recognition in the mainstream society. They strongly believe that
in this region, Chinese or non-Chinese alike, should seriously consider
changing their typical Northwest lay-back culture, if they really want to catch
up with their peers in other regions.
NWCHP
is exactly founded at the spur of these spirits. Within two months, NWCHP
rapidly built itself into an active and vibrant organization from a seed of
thought. It has gained not only widespread positive responses from CHPs, but
also recognition and support from mainstream communities. The establishment of
NWCHP opened a new page in the history of CHPs in this region. The new
organization will host various technical and commercial seminars, form broad
alliances with local industries and professional service sectors, promote the
technical/commercial exchange between Northwest and Greater China regions and
assist the formation and growth of Chinese startups. In this sense, NWCHP will
be a platform for interaction, a bridge for exchange and a hotbed for startups.
