Biographies of Board Members & Staff Members

    Mary Tan 

Mary is the Director of China Consulting and Government Relations Practice in Davis Wright Tremaine LLP.  Prior to joining DWT, Mary was a Senior Tax Accountant in Starbucks, the largest coffee company in the world, and a Senior Tax Consultant in Deloitte & Touche LLP, one of the Big Five accounting firms in the United States and around the world. As a board member of both NWCHP and the Washington State Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Mary also contributes a lot of professional services for the Chinese community in the greater Seattle area. Mary earned her Master in Taxation from Washington State University. Before moving to the U.S., Mary graduated from Peking University with B.A. in Economics, and worked as a journalist in the Economic Daily in Beijing for several years.

 

    Feng Hong

Feng is a real estate agent at Skyline Properties ( www.RealtorHong.com ) and a Biotech consultant. He has worked as senior scientist in Seattle area biotech companies with more than ten years of experience  in drug discovery and specializes in the design and synthesis of small molecules as therapeutic agents (for treating cancer and diabetes) by applying the knowledge of structure activity relationship and drug-like properties. He graduated from the Chemistry Department in Sichuan University in 1987, earned his Ph. D degree from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993. After several years of postdoctoral stint at New York University, Mayo Clinic and University of Washington, he has since worked in several biotech companies. He enjoys playing badminton, running and reading.

 Dan Mo 

Dan Mo is currently a Senior Program Manager at T-Mobile, the largest wireless carrier in the world.  He has successfully managed many multimillion dollars, large-scale wireless software programs for T-Mobile.  Prior to his current tenure, he worked at AT&T Wireless acting as a Senior Product Manager managing wireless data services, network and IT projects.  During the internet boom time, he worked as a product manager in three start-up companies with one of them successfully acquired by IBM. Dan is both business and technology savvy.  He experience spans over Product Management, Program Management, Development and Marketing.  He is an expert in executing product strategies from concept through launch.  In his early career, Dan was a software development lead Nortel Networks and BC Telephone Company. Dan holds an M.B.A. from University of British Columbia and a M.Sc. in computer science from University of Calgary. 

    Helena Sun

Helena Sun works at Vopak USA Inc. as a senior tax accountant with a specialty in computerizing sales tax compliance.  She is a CPA of Washington State and obtained her MA in Economics from Northern Illinois UniversityHelena has been actively involved in Washington China Relation Council and was the treasurer of China Chamber of Commerce for two years.  She received her BA from Beijing Finance Institute, and had worked for Beijing Computer Corporation for a couple years before coming to the States.   Besides work and family, the little flower and vegetable garden in their backyard is her proudest achievement.

 

    Po Yuan 

Po is a Software Design Engineer at Microsoft's Windows Imaging team and is engaged in developing the technology and product to make Digital Photography a household lifestyle. He has also worked in the Microsoft's Digital Media Division and helped developed Digital Rights Management related products. Before joining Microsoft, he had held engineering positions at companies of various sizes varying from Intel to a Texas Instrument spin-off to a small electronic company at Beijing's ZhongGuanCun Hi-Tech Zone. His specialty is in the fields of computer imaging, machine vision, and internet multimedia applications. Born in Beijing, China, he has a Bachelor's in E.E. (1986) and Master's in Philosophy (1989) from Tsinghua University, and an Master's in E.E. from University of Texas at Dallas (1993). Outside technology, his hobbies include photography, options trading, and Yan Xin Qigong.

    Robert Pong

Robert Pong is an Associate Broker at TEC Real Estate located in Bellevue WA. He has operated a very productive real estate business, Pacific Northwest Homes, in Seattle since 1997.  He has successfully helped many of his clients reach life long goals in re al estate investments with his ability to apply unique real estate solutions to difficult transactions.  In addition to helping his clients, Robert is also a long time real property investor himself. Robert holds degrees in International Finance & Marketing and Economics from the University of Miami. He has seven years of international marketing & sales experience from two multinational companies prior to his real estate career. Robert is the principal of Transpacific Building Products, Inc. a Seattle based building material import and trading company with offices in Nanning and Hongzhou China.    Shiang-Yu Lee

Shiang-yu is a Principal Engineer of Information Technology at the Boeing Commercial Airplanes division. He is currently involved in the data exchange standard developments within the ISO 10303 efforts, Industrial Automation Systems, for the information requirements and application concepts in “product life cycle management and support” aspects. Prior to the current assignment, he also worked at Boeing in areas of Structural Engineering, Product Development, Factory Management Systems and International Relations. Shiang-yu Lee graduated in Mechanical Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1962 and his Master and Ph. D. Degrees were both accredited from University of Delaware in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Before joining Boeing, Dr. Lee had engaged in teaching and research at University of Iowa, Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology in Taiwan and Wichita State University. Dr. Lee has published research contributions in applied mechanics and mathematics subject areas, and holds patents from the USA, ROC, Japan and UK on a “Hydromechanical Transmission” device. Shiang-yu is on the Board of Directors of the Society of Chinese Engineers of Seattle and served as President of the society during year 2000 and Chairman of the Board in 2001.

    Xin  Zou  

Xin is a software engineer at Microsoft, part-time web master of this site.  In his spare time (if any), he likes to play Weiqi, practice qigong and write some random blog.  He has a BS degree in Computer Science from Peking University (1991) and MS in C.S. from Wayne State University (1996).  He and his wife have two lovely daughters.

 

   Yanan Xu  

Yanan Xu was born in Wuhan, China. After received her BA degree from Wuhan University.  She first worked in China Import/Export Co. Wuhan Branch and later joined the UDI Ltd., Eisenberg Group, managing her efforts in import and export, marketing, sales and PR.

 In 1993, she completed her MA degree at Wuhan University. During this time, she worked as an English instructor at Tongji Medical University, focusing on English Education and translation.

Over the years, she has built a successful career in both domestic and international marketing/sales for a variety of products. Her professional experience has sharpened her ability to quickly and accurately assess situations, identify problems and focus on strategies, which obtain results.

In 1997, she moved to Seattle and started her MBA program at City University. After her graduation, she worked for CMI as a business development manager, and contributed in their successful operations in Guangdong province, China.

Yanan Xu is currently China Program Manager at City University. In this position, she is directing all her efforts on developing, promoting and managing its China and Asian educational programs.

    Frazer Haining Xia (Representative of NWCHP in Beijing, China)
     former president, board member. 

Frazer is the founder and President of Bexcel Venture Partners, a venture catalyst firm assisting startups set up and develop their businesses. He co-founded Bexcel Management Consultants (BMC) with former McKinsey and Rolandberg professionals to provide business consulting services to large and medium size companies in China. He was also the CEO of Sino-Seattle Snack Foods, a venture company that manufactured and marketed snack foods in the Chinese market. He holds a MBA from the State University of New York. Among his various hobbies, the fondest ones include listening to music and reading philosophy books. He is married with a lovely baby boy.

      Rongwei Cai (representative in Shanghai, China)

Rongwei is an Attorney with Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, currently working in its Shanghai office. Prior to his new position, he was an attorney at the law firm of Riddell Williams PS and is licensed in Washington State, Oregon, D.C. and China. He received his J.D. with honors from Lewis & Clark Law School (1990), his LL.M. from Columbia University School of Law (1987) and LL.B. from Xiamen University School of Law (1984). Since 1990, Mr. Cai has concentrated his local practice on general corporate and business, M&A and Hi-Tech laws, and his international practice on foreign investments in China. Between 1994 and 1998, Mr. Cai worked in Hong Kong and advised multinational companies regarding their investments in China. Mr. Cai co-founded and served on the Boards of several non-profit organizations in Washington, Oregon and Hong Kong.

    Carol Lin   

Carol is the founder and president of IIC and World-Trade-Search.com, a multi-language search engine software company and a multi-language global online trading business directory.  Prior to founding IIC, Ms. Lin has served as the international marketing director at Teleos Communications Inc. in N.J.,  one of the first venture funded ISDN companies in the United States.  Ms. Lin also worked for REI Investment Company in Los Angeles as its International Marketing Director, General Motors in Detroit as Computer Engineer, and IBM in New York as Computer Engineer.  Ms. Lin holds both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca NY, and MBA from UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Business.  She met her husband in Cornell who was born and brought up in Norway.  She loves travel, music, movies, animals (esp. working class dogs) and volleyball.

Steve Chen, Founder and President of PCA.
Steve Chen oversees general management of PCA. Mr. Chen began his career at the Beijing Branch of the Construction Bank of
China in 1989 as a project manager. He holds his bachelor's degree of Engineering and MBA from the School of Economic and Management of Tsinghua University. After he got his Master's degree in Computer and Electrical Engineering from Utah State University in 1992, he started working as a system engineer for Zebra Technology and Microsoft. In February 1998, he founded Pacific Communications Associates (PCA), Inc. at http://www.iptalk.com. PCA provides telephony service to China at competitive rate and better service. Customers can setup and manage his/her account from company web page.

Wei Zhang, Boeing Company
Wei is a computer scientist at the Computer Science Division of Boeing research group Phantom Works M&CT. His research covers AI, distributed computing, and software technology. At Boeing, he leads research in machine learning, data mining, and intelligent control. Before joining Boeing in 1996, he had worked at Oregon State University (OSU, 1990-96), Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT, 1987-90), and Zhejiang Meteorology Research Institute (1982-84). He had a B.S. from Zhejiang University in 1982, M.S. from BIT in 1987, and Ph.D. from OSU in 1996, all in Computer Science. Wei is married with two children, loves skiing, basketball, and outdoor activities.

David C. Chang

Dave has been working in the hi-tech industry for nearly 30 years. In the mid-80's he participated the protocol settings for the emerging technologies in data management, data modeling, and system integration concepts. Two years ago he joined the software development team supporting Boeing airplane production. He believes life is a continuous learning process. He is working with a group of people on quality, people skills, and cultural changes issues. He thinks the systematic approach, tools and method are important to team learning in our society.  Dave acquired a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Cheng Kung University, Taiwan and a M.S. in Manufacturing Engineering from Utah State University. His has been married to Ellen for 24 years. They have two daughters who graduated from college and the third is a junior at UC Berkeley.  He loves to work with people and has served in various communities since 1990.  He is the President of the Chinese NW Hikers' Association, the incumbent Chairperson of Cheng Kung University Alumni Association of Pacific Northwest, and the founder and board member of the Seattle Mandarin Club.

 

Ling Zhu

Ling Zhu is an associate in the Seattle, Washington office of Davis Wright Tremaine. Formerly a corporate attorney in the Cleveland, Phoenix, Taipei and Hong Kong offices of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, she focuses her practice  in the areas of general corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, securities law, emerging business, and international law. Prior to entering law school, Ms. Zhu was a medical writer and editor for Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute and a graduate teacher at the University of Iowa. Ms. Zhu served as an assistant professor at Shanghai International Studies University teaching undergraduates courses in translation. While residing in Cleveland, She was a legal consultant for the Association of Chinese Entrepreneurs, advising on law relating to non-profit organizations. She is a member of the State of Arizona Bar and the American Bar Association. Ms. Zhu received her J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law. She also holds an M.A. in Comparative Literatures and Cultures from the University of Iowa College and an M.A. in English Rhetoric and Stylistics from Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai, PR China.
